Balancing the Sacral Chakra
What is the Sacral Chakra?
The sacral chakra, also known as swadhisthana, is the second of the body’s energy centers. (Check out this post for info on the first chakra and how to balance it.) When it’s balanced, we feel more creative and enjoy our lives. We have healthy sex lives and fulfilling sexual relationships. Bringing this chakra into balance also allows us to sit at our optimal weight and have plenty of energy.
This chakra is located within the pelvic area and is represented by the color orange. The energy it brings leads to it being associated with water. The body parts connected to the sacral chakra are the reproductive organs.
How to Tell if Your Sacral Chakra is Unbalanced
If you’re not sure if your sacral chakra is balanced, try asking yourself these questions:
- Do I like myself?
- Do I have low self-esteem?
- Is my libido lower than I’d like?
- Do I feel uncreative?
- Do I feel a loss of enjoyment in my life?
- Do I struggle with motivation?
- Do I feel like I’m being judged by others when I express myself?
- Do I have a lot of nightmares?
If you answered yes to any of these questions, your sacral chakra might be unbalanced.
An unbalanced sacral chakra has also been associated with certain health conditions, such as dysfunction of the reproductive organs, fatigue, UTIs, constipation, infertility, lower back pain, hip pain, and painful menses.
How do I fix it?
If you’ve read this far and decided that you seem to be in pretty good shape, that’s great! Consider reading the rest of this article anyway for tips on staying in balance.
However, if you’re relating to this article a little too much and think you might have an unbalanced chakra, don’t fret! A few small lifestyle changes are enough to bring you into balance again.
Diet
It sounds like a trick, doesn’t it? Balancing your sacral chakra will help you achieve your optimal weight, but you have to go on a diet to balance your chakra. Don’t worry though. This diet doesn’t involve cutting out carbs or counting calories. Instead, this dietary change is so simple that it almost sounds a little silly.
Are you ready?
The sacral chakra is represented by the color orange, so to balance it, you need to consume more orange foods. Oranges, sweet potatoes, papaya, carrots, apricots, bell peppers, and mangoes are all good choices. Due to it’s association with water, you’ll also want to make sure that you’re consuming plenty of fluids.
Exercise
While I personally enjoy high-intensity forms of exercise, the best form of exercise for balancing chakras is yoga. For the sacral chakra specifically, you’ll want to focus on poses that stretch and open the hip area. Try incorporating some of the following into your practice:
- Pigeon
- Dancer
- Goddess
- Bound Angle
- Crescent Lunge
- Wide Legged Forward Fold
- Triangle
- Seated Forward Fold
- Happy Baby
If you don’t currently have a practice, you might consider taking an online class. I’m also currently working on a series of yoga flows to balance the entire chakra system, so check back soon for the sacral chakra flow.
Affirmations
Affirmations are great for healing all sorts of issues whether they are physical, mental, or spiritual. You can use them as a focus during meditation or yoga. Writing them in a gratitude journal also works well. For joy and creativity, try one of these:
- I am radiant and beautiful.
- I love and honor my body.
- I am a sensual and creative being.
- I accept and love myself as I am.
- I trust my feelings. I trust myself.
- I am safe to express my sexuality.
Express Yourself
Do something creative! Yes, having a blocked chakra can make it difficult to express yourself, but this is one of those “fake it ’til you make it” type deals. Write something in your journal, even if it’s just that you’re frustrated because you don’t know what to write. Take a painting class. Put on your favorite tunes and dance around your kitchen. If that’s too hard, try one of the many dance workouts on YouTube. Once you get things moving, the energy has a tendency to stay flowing.
