Balancing the Third Eye Chakra
What is the Third Eye Chakra?
The third eye chakra, also known as ajna, is the sixth of the body’s energy centers. (Check out this post for info on the first chakra and how to balance it.) When it’s balanced, we are self-aware and imaginative. We are open to learning from our life experiences. We also have a strong sense of intuition.
This chakra is located between the eyebrows and is represented by the color indigo. The energy it brings leads to it being associated with light. The third eye chakra is also linked to the endocrine system.
How to Tell if Your Third Eye Chakra is Unbalanced
If you’re not sure if your third eye chakra is balanced, try asking yourself these questions:
- Do I have a hard time trusting my intuition?
- Do I struggle with setting goals?
- Is it hard for me to see the “big picture”?
- Do I have a hard time focusing?
- Do I struggle to stay open minded?
- Do I frequently experience headaches or sinus irritation?
- Am I frequently anxious?
If you answered yes to any of these questions, your third eye chakra might be unbalanced.
An unbalanced third eye chakra has also been associated with certain health conditions, such as sinusitis, eye strain, headaches, vision problems, and anxiety. It can also make it difficult to focus and cause mental fatigue.
How do I fix it?
If you’ve read this far and decided that you seem to be in pretty good shape, that’s great! Consider reading the rest of this article anyway for tips on staying in balance.
However, if you’re relating to this article a little too much and think you might have an unbalanced chakra, don’t fret! A few small lifestyle changes are enough to bring you into balance again.
Diet
You should always consult a doctor before making any dietary changes, but supporting this chakra doesn’t require anything drastic. This diet doesn’t involve cutting out carbs or counting calories. Instead, this change is so simple that it almost sounds a little silly.
Are you ready?
The third eye chakra is represented by the color indigo, so to balance it, you need to consume more purple foods. This includes prunes, beets, grapes, purple kale, purple cabbage, blackberries, and eggplant. You’ll also want to consume omega-3s and antioxidants to support your brain health. Good sources of these include nuts, fish, flax seeds, chia seeds, coconut oil, and other healthy fats. Dark chocolate and green tea are also known for being high in antioxidants.
Exercise
While I personally enjoy high-intensity forms of exercise, the best form of exercise for balancing chakras is yoga. For the sacral chakra specifically, you’ll want to focus on poses that create a feeling of peace and balance within the body. Try incorporating some of the following into your practice:
- Easy
- Tree
- Child
- Savasana
- Supine Twist
- Seated Forward Fold
- Pigeon
- Seated Spinal Twist
If you don’t currently have a practice, you might consider taking an online class. I’m also currently working on a series of yoga flows to balance the entire chakra system, so check back soon for the solar plexus chakra flow.
Affirmations
Affirmations are great for healing all sorts of issues whether they are physical, mental, or spiritual. You can use them as a focus during meditation or yoga. Writing them in a gratitude journal also works well. For confidence and passion, try one of these:
- I trust and follow my intuition.
- My inner guidance is clear and guides me through life.
- I follow divine guidance that is given to me.
- I seek to learn from all of my life experiences.
- I feel, I act, I sense, I see.
- I possess the wisdom I need to see all that is, all that was, and all that will be.
- I re-discover my spiritual truth every day.
- I trust the divine to reveal the path I’m meant to walk in life.
